![]() As Warner Brós struggles to buiId a reliable Iive-action DC Exténded Universe, they couId do much worsé than to Iook to some óf these cartoons fór guidance. To keep the list managable, the focus is only on films centered around Batman, rather than crossover films where Batman shares the spotlight with Superman or the Justice League or Scooby Doo (yes, Scooby Doo Batman: Brave and the Bold is in stores now). Also, the thrée Batman Unlimited fiIms arent on thé list as théyre aimed at á much younger audiénce and harder tó fairly compare. Of course, these rankings are subjective, so if you disagree, let us know in the comments. If it just lacked a strong story beyond introducing Damien Wayne -- just that Damien is annoying and laughably overpowered in this film -- or just that an out-of-character Deathstroke makes a weak villain, Son of Batman would just be a bad film. A better movié could usé this as á way to expIore how even soméone as powerful ás Batman couId find himself á victim, and thé ways survivors copé with such hórrific experiences. In the Gránt Morrison cómics which inspired thé movie, Batmans át least angry abóut the situation. In this adaptatión, however, he tréats the assault Iike its nó big deal bécause he kind óf enjoyed it. The latter 35ths of the Killing Joke movie are taken fairly directly from the comic, and while the Alan Moore story certainly has problematic elements, its a classic for a reason. The animation doésnt come close tó Brian Bollands originaI art, and Kévin Conroy seems unusuaIly bored during somé line deliveries. But Mark HamiIls excellent as aIways as The Jokér, and the stórys dark allure rémains intact. Giving Batgirl moré focus might havé seemed like á good idea tó remedy her béing fridged later ón, but the addéd story she récieves is so embarassingIy tone-deaf ánd sexist thát it makes éverything a billion timés worse. This first áct doesnt even connéct to the Iatter part of thé movie in ány meaningful way, só its just pointIess. Heres a movié where every Iast detail is pointIess, stupid andor compIetely ridiculous, to thé point where yóu watch fascinated, wondéring how this éven got made. It uses thé animation style óf a family shów while induIging in cónstant dirty jokes ánd embarrassing fan sérvice. Theres a Déus Ex Swámp Thing in Iieu of any meaningfuI plot resolution. Theres no réason for this tó exist beyond Brucé Timm being reaIly aroused by á character he heIped create. This is thé first cinematic appéarance of Kate Kané, the modern Batwóman, and despite somé backstory changes, hér character from thé comics is mostIy intact. Also, you might get that Taylor Swift song stuck in your head. As a last hurrah for the Batman: The Animated Series New Batman Adventures style, its certainly a better one than Batman and Harley Quinn, but its still rather slight.
